How Woodland, Puma, Adidas and other international shoe brands may face 'smartphone industry kind' import issues

The premium footwear industry in India may face sourcing issues due to the lack of certification for factories in China and Vietnam by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The BIS Quality Control Orders (QCO) require certification for factories manufacturing footwear and key components like rubber, PVC, or polyurethane soles and heels. Some leading brands have reported that BIS is not keen on certifying factories in China and Vietnam, and may be selective with manufacturing units in Southeast Asia. Nike has requested certification for supplier factories in Indonesia and Vietnam. The industry relies heavily on imports from China, Vietnam, and Southeast Asian nations. The government aims to promote domestic manufacturing to reduce low-quality footwear imports from China.
